ITHACA, N.Y., May 10. -- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology varsity eight sprang a surprise today by defeating the Cornell heavy varsity crew by three boat lengths in the two-mile race on Cayuga Lake. The Cambridge eight went ahead at the start and held command of the race all the way down the course.
