NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 17. -- Nine prospective candidates for the Louisiana Derby ran the six furlongs of the second running of the Rex Handicap at the Fair Grounds this afternoon and Phil T. China's colt Adolphus, by High Time -- Rush Box, a 10-to-1 shot, was the winner, Harvey had the mount and the winner, under 105 pounds, ran the distance in 1:16 over a heavy track.

THE reference to Franklin's kite experiments in a recent Lowell Institute lecture by Alexander McAdie has stirred up once again a world-wide controversy bearing upon the nature and authenticity of Franklin's work in electrical research. The main point at issue is whether Franklin caused to be elevated into the cloud area a kite by means of which electricity was conveyed to earth by way of the control cord.
