EAST ORANGE, N.J., Aug. 22. -- That there is strength in numbers was proved again here this afternoon at the Metropolitan A.A.U. senior outdoor track and field championships held at Ashland Stadium, when the Mercury Foot band of the New York A.C., forty strong, carried off the district athletic championship in hollow fashion.

The pennant chance of the Giants received a staggering blow up at the Polo Grounds yesterday when the Pirates gave the National League champions a double thrashing before a crowd which jammed the big stands with 55,000 onlookers. The Buccaneers took the first game 8 to 1 and grabbed the second 2 to 1.

CLEVELAND, Aug. 22. -- Despite a very diverting and sprightly homer by Babe Ruth, the Yankees underwent their third straight defeat today, the Indians benefitting to the extent of 5 to 4. Not only have th eYanks lost three at one clip, but they have also lost them by one run each, which will happen in the best of families.

Robert Patrick Mulligan was an American director and producer. He is best known for his sensitive dramas, including To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Summer of '42 (1971), The Other (1972), Same Time, Next Year (1978), and The Man in the Moon (1991). He was also known for his extensive collaborations with producer Alan J. Pakula in the 1960s.
