TOKIO, Sept. 14. -- The latest official statements on yesterday's typhoon on the Island of Kiushiu states the number of deaths to be 719, houses demolished to be 1,850 and houses flooded to be 3,000. Ten miles of dikes were washed away and thirty-seven vessels were swept from their moorings.

Plane Arrives in Tokio.

TOKIO, Sept. 14. -- While Tokio was lashed by tempests and the tail of a typhoon was hanging Yokohama's tin roofs on telegraph wires, the Pride of Detroit, the round-the-world plane, started from Omura at 6:35 A.M. today, and, keeping behind the storm all the way, arrived at the Kasumigaura airfield at 3:05 P.M.

Rudolf Anderson Jr. was an American Air Force major and pilot. He was the first recipient of the Air Force Cross, the U.S. military's and Air Force's second-highest award and decoration for valor. The only U.S. fatality by enemy fire during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Anderson was killed when his U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down over Cuba. He had previously served in Korea during the Korean War.
