MILFORD, Conn., Dec. 18 (AP). -- Simon Lake, inventor of the even keel type of submarine, told The Bridgeport Telegram tonight what he thought was the only possible manner of rescuing members of the crew of S-4 who are alive within its sunken shell.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18. -- News that at least six men were still alive in the sunken S-4 was sent to the Navy Department early this evening by Rear Admiral Brumby, who is in charge of the rescue operations off off the tip of Cape Cod. He stated that the information had come from the locked room by means of hammer knocks executed in the Morse code against the side of the submarine.
