He is widely known for his role as patriarch Gomez Addams in The Addams Family (1964โ1966), reprising the role in the television film Halloween with the New Addams Family (1977) and the animated series The Addams Family (1992โ1993).

He used a variety of instruments in his performances, notably the didgeridoo and the Stylophone, and is credited with the invention of the wobble board.
