CHUNGKING, China, May 28 -- Japanese troops have launched a drive down the Hankow rail route in northern Hunan Province, the Chinese High Command announced today, in a possible attempt to occupy the entire Canton-Hankow railway and establish a defense against possible American landings on the China coast.

WITH THE FIFTH ARMY, South of Rome, May 28 -- New Fifth Army attacks are smashing into German defenses along the coastal routes to Rome, winning back with few casualties the shelltorn ground from which the Allies were driven early in February after they had advanced to points within sixteen miles of the capital.
