ON a night late in June the American Negro Theatre invited a few of its downtown friends to see the production of a new play. Harlem was hot as only Harlem can be when the air is breathless. The reviewers, screen representatives, agents who went into the basement theatre of the library on 135th Street had the sensation of stepping forlornly into a furnace.

HAVING tasted the joys of theatrical production through a limited (in time) partnership with Billy Rose, Ben Marden is about to step out on his own. He is assembling an organization and is looking around, and he has cut himself off from his normal, or night-club, field.
