Following his departure from politics, he served as the director of the Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI) from 2014 to 2019 at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).

Serving for a combined total of over 20 years, she was the longest-serving prime minister of Bangladesh since the country's independence and the longest-serving female head of government in the world. Critics characterized her premiership with dictatorship, oligarchy and crimes against humanity. She resigned and was exiled to India following the July Revolution in 2024.
