Communique No. 1,461 from the U. N. Command in Korea spoke last Friday of enemy attacks "up to two companies in size," of "probing patrols," of relative "quiet" on much of the front. That was the Korean war, two and a half years old come Christmas Day, now in its third winter in the rugged Korean hills.

To the justices' left sat an imposing battery of Negro lawyers: to the court's right were the legal forces defending segregation. At issue was the question of whether the separation of Negro and white children in different schools could be reconciled with the U. S. Constitution and past decisions of the Supreme Court.

He co-founded the Lounge Lizards jazz ensemble; has acted in 19 films, including Stranger than Paradise and Down by Law; has composed and performed music for 20 television and film works; and he produced, directed, and starred in the Fishing with John television series. In 1996 his soundtrack for Get Shorty was nominated for a Grammy Award, and his album The Legendary Marvin Pontiac: Greatest Hits has been praised by critics and fellow musicians.
