Georgy Maximilianovich Malenkov was a Soviet politician who led the Soviet Union after Joseph Stalin died in March 1953. In the initial aftermath of Stalin's death, Malenkov succeeded him in his leadership positions within both the government and party apparatus. Barely over a week later, he relinquished his membership in the Secretariat while remaining in office as Premier of the Soviet Union and chairman of the Central Committee Presidium. Thereafter, Malenkov entered into a power struggle with his replacement as acting First Secretary, Nikita Khrushchev, that culminated in his removal from the premiership in 1955 and the Presidium altogether in 1957.
