C. 4-A champion at the mile, created a bit of a surprise this afternoon when he romped to victory in the eight-furlong scratch event that featured the 157th track and field games of the New York Athletic Club held at Travers Island.

A clean single to left center by Jackie Robinson, a bad-hop single on a double play ball by Roy Campanella and Gil Hodges' second home run of the game, all in the ninth inning, yesterday gave the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals at Ebbets Field and returned them to first place in the National League.

CHANTILLY, France, June 6 -- Ernie Arend Jr. of Deal, N. J., last American in the French amateur golf championship, bowed out in the semi-finals today after beating the only other remaining United States player in the morning quarter-finals.
