A bitter fight is being waged for the privilege of filling America's sugar bowl. The contest is between thedomestic cane and beet sugar industries, but even they are united against sundry mutual enemies. Sugar beet growers and processors entered the ring as a serious threat to the long‐established cane refiners when Cuba's output was barred from this country in July, 1960. But it was not until this year that the threat was viewed as a“life‐or‐death struggle for survival,” as one can sugar man. declared last week. There are three major reasons for this increase in fear on the part of can sugar people. For one thing, the beet sugar industry is sinking vast sums of money into processing plants across the nation and declaring that they are here to stay. Some $200 million has been spent or earmarked for such plants in the last year. Second, the sugar beet growers were previously confined to the West, while the cane refiners held the lion's share of the market in the East. Now, however, sugar beet growing is spreading to the East. The Pepsi‐Cola Company, for example, is to erect a $22 million plant near Auburn, N. Y., to process locally grown beets.
