NEWS OF THE RIALTO; Sidney Poitier Completes His Play‐Seven Arts Wins Georgia Brown

FROM Sidney Poitier there is mixed news this morning. The disappointing portion —to get the unpleasant out of the way first—is that complications have raised their multiple heads to obstruct the probability of our seeing him in the title role of “Othello” next season. David Merrick was going to sponsor that and Tony Richardson was to be the director. But film commitments now have both the actor and the director in their golden vise and Mr. Poitier, no matter what, will not venture the Moor until Mr. Richardson is free.

FROM PARIS WITH LOVE COMES THE ‘FOLIES BERGERE’

ON Tuesday evening, the curtains of the Broadway Theater will part to display on its stage a staircase stretching to heaven or slightly beyond. On it will be figures mainly girls, some dressed in brilliant, feathered costumes, some in an approach to the original worn by the first apple‐eater of the Garden of Eden. In phrases far more direct than those used by members of the French New Wave or the Gallic existentialists, they will chant that here, at last, is the “‘Folies Bergere’—mais oui”

Stéphane Caristan is a retired hurdler from France, who set the world's best year performance in 1986. He did so by winning the men's 110 metres hurdles final at the European Championships in Stuttgart, clocking 13.20, which was also his personal best. He competed in three consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country, starting in 1984. Caristan later became the coach of French sprinter Christine Arron.
