WEST POINT, N. Y., Oct. 10 —Rollie Stichweh of Army put on a last‐ditch, one‐man show that had a record crowd of 32,268 boiling with excitement in Michie Stadium today. But Penn State stopped the 78‐yard advance on its 2‐yard line in the last two minutes and won the football game, 6—2.

ON reaching middle life, French authors, perhaps more than those of other nations, seem to feel an urge to tell the cruel truth about themselves in the first person. There are many impressive examples, from the first great 18th‐century self‐revelation, Rousseau's “Confessions,” to Andre Gide's “If It Die,” the first open admission of homosexuality in the 20th century. The most celebrated of living French Writers has now started on his autobiography, and this is bound to be something of a literary event. In this short, initial volume of his life story, Sartre (who was bom in 1905) does not get beyond the age of 12, so that he can hardly be expected to admit to anything extravagantly shocking. But his book is surprising, and the fact that it has become a best‐seller in France is to be explained not only by its intrinsic merits but also by its apparent contradiction of a great deal that Sartre was thought to stand for.
