Lehman Art Collection Is Given to the Metropolitan; Lehman Collection Given to Museum

Art collection of late R Lehman, valued at over $100-million, given to Met Museum of Art, NYC; gift, comprising nearly 3,000 objects of W Eur art, is said to be 1 of world's greatest collections, comparable in scope and quality to Frick, Mellon and Widener Collections; collection was begun some 60 yrs ago by Lehman's father, Philip, and is especially rich in Italian paintings of 14th and 15th centuries, Flemish, French and Ger paintings of Renaissance and French paintings of 19th and 20th centuries; described; terms of pact between R Lehman foundation and museum specify that gift, now housed in Lehman's 18-room Park Av apt and 5-story mansion on W 54th St, be preserved 'forever' as separate entity within museum; gift announced by foundation pres E L Weisl and Lehman's son, Robert Owen, at dinner inaugurating museum's yr-long centennial fetes; dinner took place in museum's 6 newly renovated Eur paintings galleries, now open to pub; illus; Hoving hails gift
