Jersey Turnpike Soon to Be Billion-Dollar Borrower

When the New Jersey Turnpike Authority dips into the capital market this week for $135-million, the operator of the nation's most profitable toll road will become the most debt-heavy as well. This financing, the sixth and final installment of a $614-million program to cover widening of the northern 30 miles of the turnpike, will raise the total of the authority's bond issues since 1950 to $1.08-billion.
