Army Intercepts Missile In ABM Test Over Pacific
Safeguard system, in first test against incoming, rather than static target, successfully intercepts over Kwajalein Atoll a Minuteman 1 nose cone fired from Vandenberg Air Force Base, 4,200 mi away; map; interception was made by Spartan missile at undisclosed alt; Spartan launching from Kwajalein illus; Defense Dept repts neither Spartan nor nose cone carried warheads; repts test lacked several elements of real attack in that Kwajalein facility had been alerted and nose cone was not accompanied by decoys or other penetration aids; test is not expected to deter opposition to Safeguard deployment; Dr Lapp says no one doubted that Spartan was effective ABM, but notes it would be considerably less effective against missile with multiple warheads; also notes that Sprint missile, shorter-range element of Safeguard, which should be most effective counter against 'saturation' attack, has not been tested
