THE CLIFFS OF MOHER rise majestical ly 700 feet above the Atlantic, on the west coast of Ireland, south of Galway. I was headed for the cliffs but had lost my way, and I pulled to the side of a country road and inquired directions of an elderly gentleman seated on his porch. It was nippy and the old gent wore his scarf and cap and gloves, puffing on his pipe as he stepped to the, car. Putting his hand on the door jamb, he slowly, with gestures of his pipe hand, gave me detailed instruction. He went on for about five minutes, and soon I had di rections for finding the cliffs and the location of one or two country inns, plus a guide for determining the weather. And then I was answering inquiries about my beginnings, my trip and my health. I started to ease out the clutch, thanking him profusely, and moved the car gently into gear. He hung on. By the time I wrested the car from his strong hand, I must have been moving eight miles an hour. Relinquishing his grip he final ly sent me down the road with a wave and a &#8220;God Bless!&#8221;
