OUR summer house was a model of Provencal elegance. Situated in the tiny town of Venasque, some 20 miles northeast of Avignon, it was originally part of a 15thcentury monastery and had been impeccably restored in the early nineteensixties. Done entirely in stone, great dark beams, ruddy tiles and vaulted ceilings, it perched on the edge of a 1,000&#8208;foot limestone cliff that offered us a commanding view of the Vaucluse Valley with its neat rows of cherry trees and sun&#8208;soaked apricot orchards, its scrambling vineyards, sharp cliffs and sweep of purple mountains. At sunset, we would sip aperitifs and watch the sun leave the valley. And, if the mosquitoes were at bay; we would stay on to watch lightning dance on Mount Ventoux, at 6,000 feet the tallest mountain entirely in France.
