He thought he was finished with Broadway and, in deed, hasn't been in the precinct since 1966, when ho staged “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” (before that, he is remembered for directing such as “Funny Girl,” “The Diary of Anne Frank” and his own “Born Yes terday”).

The plain fact of it is that Fyodor Dostoevsky was a novelist, a literary artist who wrote works of imagina tive fiction. To say this is not to belabor the obvious: much of what one gets to read and to hear on the subject of Dostoevsky could very easily lead one to believe, if one didn't know better, that he was a theologian, a political analyst, an ex istentialist philosopher or some sort of revolutionary. Back in 1940, Er nest J. Simmons, in one of the earliest American books on this writ er, had to remind his readers that whatever other dimensions Dostoev sky's books may possess, they are, after all, novels. That reminder is still as timely as ever.
