THE malaise that has been developing over the state of the economy seemed to broaden last week in the financial markets, in business circles, among the public and even in Washington.
JUST before the house lights went down at a preview of Luchino Vis conti's “Death in Venice” (now playing at the Little Carnegie Theater), I overheard the following con versation between two young people. By their dress, manner and vocabulary, they had already proclaimed themselves to be members of the hip New York scene, that group of achieving survivors whose identity, I suspect, is largely de fined by the consumer goods they elect to purchase, and by the promotion and advertising by which those elections are rigged. The Hip Young Man and the Hip Young Woman had obviously heard about the film's rave reviews in London, and about its 25th Anniversary Award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
