Whitney Stakes: Protanto wins

CALI, Colombia, Aug. 7— Kim Peyton was nervous, more nervous than any time in her competitive swimming career. “I wanted to do well,” she said, “because I thought it would get our team off to a good start.”

The heralded Martin Re port has officially emerged from the crisis that beset Wall Street last year, and it already is proving controver sial.

“THERE is a general as sumption among Ameri cans that the British theater, boasting seven or eight major critics (as opposed to the formidable Gold Dust twins of New York), is unquestionably in a more salutary artistic state. But for all the variety of re sponse one gets from the British drama critics, there might just as well be only two, Although there are sev eral national papers, plus the weekly and monthly outlets which are react by theater goers and therefore exert some influence, there is an appalling uniformity of taste. The six or seven individuals who regularly opine about the London theater do not ex press six or seven different shades of opinion. I don't mean to suggest that they all respond identically; obvious ly, some are pleased, some are displeased, and others reverberate with the kind of inconclusive neutrality which has become the hallmark of English drama criticism. But there are no radical differ ences in temperament, and very few in background.
