SOME time early in 1945, Mrs. Harold Prince (then Judy Chaplin), wife of the noted producer&#8208;director, was heard to make an unusual comment about &#8220;The Star&#8208;Spangled Banner.&#8221; Upon hearing the strains of our national anthem at a large gathering, she turned to her neighbor, looked up and said in a loud voice, &#8220;I know that. That's the overture to &#8220;On the Town.'&#8221; She had to look up, because she was about 21/2 years old at the time. Though remarkably worldly for her age, she had as yet seen only one Broadway show, but had seen it at least a dozen times, and it happened to be &#8220;On the Town&#8221; because her parents were close friends of ours.
