Elizabeth City Hall Under Investigation
Trenton, NJ, law enforcement officials disclose on Sept 5 that adm of Elizabeth Mayor Dunn is target of Union County grand jury investigation; Dunn, Dem who is running for 3d term, asserts that he has 'no knowledge' of any investigation involving him or his adm; notes that he volunteered last spring to go before county grand jury; official sources say that jury is investigating charges of payoffs and kickbacks involving city officials, contracts and businessmen; city license officials have been subpoenaed, as well as number of city records and contracts; Dunn asserts he volunteered to appear before jury to 'clear the air' of allegations contained in conversations bugged by Elizabeth tavern owner, J Oliveri; Oliveri secrety taped conversations involving some city officials over 6âyr period; County Prosecutor K Asch refuses to comment on nature of reptd investigation but notes his staff has been instructed to seek indictments before Nov 7 elections; last wk, 2 of Dunn's 3 mayoral opponents were indicted in separate matters by grand jury; M J Nilsen, Repub freeholder in county, was indicted on charges of assault in Aug in case involving alleged extortion; in other indictment, M J DeMartino, Elizabeth Dem City Councilman, was charged with misconduct in office in case involving $3,000 bribe in '68; county pol observers note that indictments of 2 of Dunn's opponents were sought by Repub prosecutor and were seen as aiding Dunn's reâelection chances; Dunn recently endorsed Pres Nixon for reâelection; Dunn illus
