ALMOST an even 1,000 years ago a quarrelsome Viking named Eirike Porvaldsson (Eric the Red) managed to get himself expelled (on charges of manslaughter) first from his native Norway and then from his island of exile, Iceland. Forced to move even farther west, to the southwest tip of another, vaster island, and being a budding huckster, he brazen ly dubbed the icy, rocky, thoroughly inhospitable new place “Greenland.” Then he returned to Iceland, gathered up boatloads of families with their livestock and took them to settle in Greenland, where they naive ly believed they would find warm pastures and forests.

He was a scholar and a professor of English at Columbia University for nearly 40 years, where he inspired a generation of influential writers and thinkers including Thomas Merton, Robert Lax, John Berryman, Whittaker Chambers, and Beat Generation writers such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. He was literary editor of The Nation, in New York City from 1924 to 1928 and its film critic from 1935 to 1938.
