US Sup Ct rules it is unconst for states to deny women equal opportunity to serve on juries, citing shift in econ and soc patterns in US; 8‐to‐1 decision seen breaking important philosophical ground by acknowledging for 1st time that role of women in soc is changing and that cts must recognize their growing ind in assessing their legal rights; all states already have laws that do not exempt women from jury service, although women are treated differently from men in some instances; decision overrules '61 ruling in which Cit sustained Fla law discouraging female jury service; current ruling could have important consequences for defendants convicted under old La law, since changed, which barred woman from serving unless she applied in writing to ct; decision reverses death sentence for kidnapping and rape imposed on Billy J Taylor by all‐male jury; he must now be given new trial or released; thousands of inmates in La who were convicted by similar juries may now ask for retroactive application of ruling; Justice Rehnquist dissents; Chief Justice Burger concurred in result but declined to sign majority opinion (L)
