IT is 7 P.M. after a long day's skiing in the deep powder of Mount Niseko on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido Outside the thermometer is plunging toward zero, and on the mountain is snowmg again, enormous light white flakes. By American custom one should be getting ready for a drink or a reliming dinner. But there is no one in the bar of the Alpine Mountain Lodge; the dining room is closed, and even the huge, steamy public bath is empty. The reason—and this would be true at many of Japan's 600 ski areas—is that everyone is still on the slopes, which are floodlit for night skiing.
