Alexander M. Bickel, who died at age 49, was a quintuple threat, although he did not compartmentalize his various roles: he was intellectual provocateur to a generation of students (after training at Harvard Law, he taught at Yale). Constitutional scholar (among his books “The Least Dangerous Branch: The Suprem Court at the Bar of Politics”), political journalist (contributing editor, The New Republic), public man (political campaigner, talk show guest, Congressional testifier) and controversial advocate (he represented The New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case, although to the disappointment of civil libertarians he underplayed the First Amendment. his strategy prevailed as the U.S. Supreme Court decided 6.3 against the Government).
