The first program in the series “Live From Lincoln Center,” a telecast of the New York Philharmonic from Avery Fisher Hall, was shown on Jan. 30 over Channel 13, with a stereo simulcast on WQXR‐FM. The event raises serious questions about the value of transmitting the performing arts live from theaters and concert hall, as opposed to doing specially prepared versions for television. Promotional material from Lincoln Center stressed the idea that live broadcasts of this sort are a sine qua non in conveying the true spirit and vitality of performances, and that other methods are in some sense a betrayal of artistic integrity. There may be merit in these views, but considering how the series came into being, one might wonder whether Lincoln Center is making a virtue out of what was in large part a technological and economic necessity.

AFTER a cheerless, work‐a‐day January, there is a long holiday break in sight. It starts with Lincoln's Birthday next Thursday and ends the following Monday, which is this year's day for celebrating George Washington's movable birthday.
