DEATH TOLL MOUNTS TO 574 IN COLLISION OF 747'S IN CANARIES

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain, March 28—With the airport here still littered with the charred remains of the two jetliners that collided on the runway yesterday in dense fog, the death toll rose today to 574, and investigators sought to determine how the crash had occurred.

Contradictions Veiling Crash

Critical unknowns, confusion and contradictions faced investigators yesterday as they set out to reconstruct the events that led to the collision of two jumbo jets on a Canary Islands runway. There seemed to be good prospects that the cause of the catastrophe would emerge from electronic recording devices, interviews with crew members and other survivors from the Pan American World Airways plane, and interrogation of traffic controllers.

Nina Ellen Riggs was an American writer and poet. Her best known work is her memoir, The Bright Hour, detailing her journey as a mother with incurable breast cancer. It was published shortly after her death. The book received critical acclaim. Riggs also contributed an article to New York Times series Modern Love.
