General Hershey Dead at 83

His name, like that of the late J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal, Bureau of Investigation, was virtually synonymous with the organization he headed for more than a generation. General Hershey helped to set up the Selective Service System before World War II, became a key figure as its director in the mobilization of the United States against the armies of Japan and Germany and kept running it until 1970, when he stepped down at the age of 76.

The rise was eight&#8208;tenths of 1 percent in the Labour Department's index last month as against gains of six&#8208;tenths in March, 1 percent in February and eighttenths in January, which works out to an annual rate of 9.6 percent thus far in 1977. The department reported that the index for April stood at 179.6 based on the 1967 average of 100, so that goods costing $100 in 1967 would be priced at $179.60 in April.
