After all the harsh words that preceded Prime Minister Menahem Begin's visit to Washington last week, there was an almost audible sigh of relief when it was over. Although neither Israel nor the United States had changed their basic nosition, Mr. Begin and President Carter apparently hit it off personally in more than five hours of face‐to‐face talks. Indeed the personal warmth overshadowed the serious diplomatic difficulties that remain on the road to a Geneva peace conference.
