STAGE VIEW

IN one of his masks, Gore Vidal is a literary critic. In that role, he has always been strikingly sober and serious and, well, highminded about the art of writing novels. The collection of essays he published last year, &#8220;Matters of Fact and of Fiction,&#8221; was for most of its pages predictably obnoxious/amusing; but in places, wherever Mr. Vidal touched on contemporary novelists or, with disdain, on academic &#8220;Novel Theory,&#8221; he showed himself still to be the earnest devotee of the form that he was 20 years ago, when he wrote, in this Book Review, of the novel as pre&#8208;eminentlythe &#8220;humane art.&#8221; His point then was the benign paradox that the shrinking audience for fiction was really a good thing, because it left the novel only &#8220;the best things: that exploration of the inner world's divisions and distinctions where no camera may follow,&#8221; the fine, the difficult, &#8220;the private.&#8221; With the masses addicted to television, and even the &#8220;serious small&#8221; elite more alive to film than to prose, one could hope that the hacks, &#8220;the meretricious and the ordinary [would] desert entirely, leaving only the devoted lashed to the mast.&#8221; It's fair to presume that the young novelist thought of himself as so lashed, safe from the siren call of the mass market.

An Appalachian Travail

WE hardly ever hear about the &#8220;nonfiction novel&#8221; anymore. This was a coinage made famous in the 1960's by Truman Capote on the publication of &#8220;In Cold Blood,&#8221; and its vogue coincided with the advent of the New Journalism, which likewise appropriated the methods, or at least the mannerisms, of fiction while ostensibly dealing with factual materials. In recent years, however, the term &#8220;nonfiction novel&#8221; has virtually disappeared from literary discourse, but the genre it described&#8212;&#8220;novels,&#8221; or at least narratives, alleged to consist of actual rather than imagined characters, conversations and events &#8212; is still very much with us, and has become less and less distinguishable from the kind of New Journalism in which it is the state of the author's &#8220;feelings&#8221; that is at all times paramount. Only now there are more and more of these books that no longer bother with such fussy labels. They are allowed to pass as straight nonfiction.
