Fire in Rio de Janeiro's Museum of Modern Art destroys more than 1,000 works of art; collector Jean Boghci comments (S)

WASHINGTON — The Carter Administration is fascinated with the possibility of a close relationship with the People's Republic of China. The Chinese in turn seem intrigued by this infatuation, even though they continue to assault the United States verbally at nearly every opportunity. Recently, with the Panama Treaties approved and the strategic arms talks seemingly close to final accord, the goahead has been given to probe the Chinese question in several volitical. economic and military areas.

The players’ voices rang hollowly in the scruffy confines of a church basement on Manhattan's Upper West Side, their Elizabethan accents sounding an incongruous contrast to the cinderblock walls, sagging basketball hoops and battered folding chairs that were the setting for their labors. Lynn Redgrave, looking boyish in tricorn hat and cut‐off white jeans, was about to be drawn into a mock duel. Joseph Bova, cutting the air with his sword, muttered a non-Shakespearean wisecrack that broke up the other actors and the scene. On the sidelines, director Gerald Freedman laughed along with the rest and quietly signaled for another runthrough. This time the scene played flawlessly and Mr. Freedman, calling a halt for lunch, knew that another segment of “Twelfth Night” had fallen into place.
