THE Medal of Freedom was presented by President Carter yesterday to Arthur J. Goldberg for distinguished service as a Cabinet officer, Supreme Court Justice and chief delegate to the United Nations. Mr. Carter praised Mr. Goldberg, who helped draft United Nations Resolution 242, a 1967 directive calling for an Israeli withdrawal from Arab territory in return for peace. Mr. Carter called the resolution “the unshakable basis for ultimate agreement in the Middle East.” Last week President Anwar el‐Sadat of Egypt put much of the blame for continued Israeli occupation of Arab lands on Mr. Goldberg's shoulders, but Jody Powell, the White House press secretary, said that the timing of yesterday's award, the highest given to a civilian, had nothing to do with the Egyptian President's criticism of Mr. Goldberg as a “Zionist.” Mr. Goldberg, who is 69 years old, has served as Secretary of Labor and is a one‐time Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. He will soon retire from his latest Government job, as an ambassador at large at the Belgrade conference on human rights.

1978Diarmuid O'Sullivan, Irish hurler and manager[†]
Diarmuid O'Sullivan is an Irish hurling coach and hurler who plays for Cork Premier Championship club Cloyne. He played for the Cork senior hurling team for 12 years, during which time he usually lined out as a full-back. A fan favourite who was noted for his swashbuckling style during his inter-county career, O'Sullivan is considered a "Cork legend".

Robert James Heffron, also known as Bob Heffron or R. J. Heffron, was a long-serving New South Wales politician, union organiser and AustralianLabor Party (ALP) Premier of New South Wales from 1959 to 1964. Born in New Zealand, Heffron became involved in various Socialist and labour movements in New Zealand and later Australia before joining the Australian Labor Party. A prominent unionist organiser, he was gaoled for "conspiracy to strike action". He was later elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Botany in 1930. However his disputes with party leader Jack Lang led to his expulsion from the ALP in 1936 and Heffron formed his own party from disgruntled Labor MPs known as the Industrial Labor Party. The success of his party enabled his readmission to the party and his prominence in a post-Lang NSW Branch which won office in 1941.
