WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 — The Federal Bureau of Investigation received a report in 1979 that a Missouri businessman was “the individual who made the payoff of James Earl Ray after the killing” of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., according to documents made public today.

Sales among six of New York City's largest‐volume department stores in July showed the highest monthly gain of 1978, but at least a third of the monthly advance was attributable to an aberration in the 1977 results — the blackout that closed the city's stores an entire day.
