In Shanghai in 1972, when President Nixon and Prime Minister Chou En‐lai issued their communiqué, nobody thought it would take nearly seven years to establish diplomatic relations between the world's most powerful nation and the world's most populous nation. Yet when the announcement finally came last week, it was dramatically sudden. Relations will be established on Jan. 1, and ambassadors exchanged in March. “In recognizing that the People's Republic of China is the single Government of China” President Carter told the nation from the White House, “we are recognizing simple reality.” In Peking's Great Hall, Prime Minister Hua Kuo‐feng, China's nominal leader, was saying much the same thing.

Ellen Frankfort has finally rented the house she couldn't get last summer. It is just what she wanted, a Victorian with living room, dining room, three bedrooms, even a morning room full of wicker furniture and hand‐hooked rugs. However, she is now relentlessly closing off as much space as possible, hoping she can reduce the house to the size of a small apartment.
