IT was not a matter of much interest to me as long as it was an innocent beverage that Americans were consuming by the thousands of gallons in the fancy saloons and salons of Manhattan. to the beginning was a bit annoyed at guests in my home who demanded it in lieu of. my &#8220;super dry (brand name deleted) martinis straight'up with a twist of lemon&#8221; or my incredible margaritas served in a chilled salt&#8208;rimmed glass. I was fascinated to find six packs of the stuff jampacked, along with the lesser, inexpensive cuts of meats, in the shopping carts of a few middle&#8208;income families in my &#8220;fashionable&#8221; hometown of East Hampton. I could keep my peace when I saw it sipped by certain ladies of the evening (they linger for hours over one small bottle) at one of my favorite hotel bars in midtown. I am used to the cyclic and harmless aberrations of Americans.
