As Prime Minister for 11 years, Pierre Elliott Trudeau tried to become a symbol of unity for the two cultures of Canada. Last week, his Liberal Party was defeated in elections that showed the country more divided than ever. Liberal support came over- whelmingly from Quebec and smaller French‐speaking islands in Englishdominated Canada. The rest of Canada elected as Prime Minister a clean‐cut Albertan named Joe Clark.

After hitting an iceberg in Philadelphia and enduring one of the most drastic overhauls in theatrical history, the musical version of “I Remember Mama” will sail into its Broadway opening Thursday night at the Majestic with all flags flying. Liv Ullmann will be singing in her first musical, the orchestra will be playing the latest Richard Rodgers score, and somewhere in the counting houses the people who put up $1,250,000 to launch the show will have their fingers tightly ‘ crossed. The backers will be praying that “Mama” has been turned around sufficiently since it came under the fire of the Philadelphia critics to withstand the rigors of Broadway, which this sea- son has already seen several likely musicals capsize.
