If you are a fancier of chrysanthemums, you can indulge yourself at a festival that starts today in Bristol, Conn. More than 80,000 specimens of the perennial, from delicate button pompons the size of a nickel to full chapelbells 4 inches in diameter, are growing in a field of the Bristol Nurseries, and 35,000 more are potted and may be purchased. There are singlepetal mums that look like daisies and others whose long petals open out at the tips like spoons. Some are rust, some white, red, yellow, pink or purple, and they are just starting to come into color; the high point of bloom is the last week of September and the whole month of October. In fact, in October, you'll be able to dig up what pleases you in the field and take it home, for a little more than a dollar a pot. So the opening this weekend is a kind of appetizer. The event will include boat and bicycle races tomorrow and floats and marching bands Sunday. You can drink beer both days. The festival ends Oct. 7. To reach it from New York City, take Interstate 84 to Route 69 to Bristol.
