Last week was even worse &#8212; in deed and in the prospect for early release of the remaining 49 Americans held hostage in the United States Embassy in Teheran since Nov. 4.

The reading took three hours, though in later years Dickens would prune &#8220;A Christmas Carol&#8221; to a two&#8208;hour performance; he liked it well enough that first time, however,. to repeat the reading three days later &#8212; to an audience of 2,500, almost exclusively composed of working people, for whom he had requested that the auditorium be reserved.
