A man dressed as a police officer was summoned to help a subway token-booth clerk early yesterday. Instead, the police said, he ended up helping to steal $11,000 in cash and tokens. What happened at IRT booth No. 635 at President Street and Nostrand Avenue in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, according to police officials, was this: At about 3:15 A.M. yesterday, two men jumped a turnstile without paying and disappeared down the platform stairs.

Detailed images streaming back to Earth from the Voyager 2 spacecraft have revealed the startling features of Uranus's major moons, and awestruck scientists studying the photographs today described the findings as bizarre, exotic and extraordinary. In particular, the moon Miranda, a 310-mile-wide object that once was only a faint point of light in the sky, was emerging as an icy world unlike any other ever seen in the solar system. In the Voyager pictures, taken Friday 2 billion miles from the earth and made public today, the surface of Miranda is seen to be a rugged mix of valleys and deep fractures, long ridges and a multitude of craters, glacial flows, broad terraces like uneven stacks of pancakes and puzzling features that resemble a racetrack and a bright chevron. Geology of Mercury and Mars ''It's all the strange places rolled into one,'' said Dr. Laurence A. Soderblom, deputy leader of the photographic interpretation team. Dr. Soderblom, who is with the United States Geological Survey, said Miranda seemed to be a ''bizarre hybrid'' of the geology of the planets Mercury and Mars and some of the large moons of Jupiter and Saturn.

''It was a long way, but it was worth it. A lot of dreams were fulfilled.

Doctors at Bellevue Hospital Center are breaking with tradition and making house calls on sick and dying AIDS patients throughout the city. Bellevue officials say the home visits - unusual for any physician and virtually unheard of at any major teaching hospital - are part of a new teaching program designed to make young residents who are being trained for general practice more responsive to the needs of the patients, particularly those close to death. The house calls, they say, involve the hardest things doctors ever face: caring for the dying and helping patients and families cope with the sadness, anger and fear that often accompany death. 'Helping Someone Die' ''No one ever really tells you how to do it,'' said Dr. Adina Kalet, a second-year resident in the program. ''Doctors here are usually taught to fight death to the end, and there I was helping someone die as peacefully and comfortably as possible,'' she said in recalling several visits she had made to an AIDS patient named Neil.

Within the last few months, private investment banks on Wall Street have been falling like dominos. Such venerable firms as Bear, Stearns & Company, Alex. Brown & Sons and L. F. Rothschild, Unterberg, Towbin have all decided to switch from private to public hands. Last week, Morgan Stanley & Company, one of Wall Street's most prestigious firms, announced that it, too, would become a publicly traded company, ending its 51-year history as a private banking house. Morgan's decision took on heightened importance, largely because the firm had for so long symbolized the old guard of Wall Street's private elite.
