On the eve of a pivotal game with its fiercest rival, St. John's faces the prospect of playing Georgetown without its best player. One day after suffering the worst injury of his career, Walter Berry, St. John's 6-foot-8-inch center, was examined and received treatment yesterday for his injured left ankle. He was given permission to try to play tonight against Georgetown at the Capital Centre. But how much and how well Berry will play is a question that won't be determined until the game begins.

All-star games are usually showcases for individuals. This one started with a passing show by Earvin (Magic) Johnson, but ended with a display of coaching strategy. ''They were awesome out there,'' said K. C. Jones, the coach of the East all-stars, commenting on how the West opened the game. In the end, however, Jones's team won the National Basketball Association All-Star Game, 139-132, when he finished the game with a team of Isiah Thomas and four big men.

Even before the silvery pterodactyl swooped into view, Augustus C. Agate knew it was there. Even with his car windows rolled up and heater going full blast and traffic clanging on the Cross Bay Boulevard - even above the sound of his own voice -Mr. Agate could distinguish the low growl. ''There's the SST!'' he called out. And, indeed, the Concorde soon appeared through a scrim of sleet, looking majestic as it sailed over the Big Bow Wow Deli and the Cross Bay Amusement Park and the Tilerama.

The Manhattan District Attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau, has widened his investigation into allegations of city corruption, issuing dozens of subpoenas to city agencies over the last few weeks. He has extended his inquiry beyond the Parking Violations Bureau's contract with one company, he confirmed yesterday. The expanded inquiry parallels similar investigations by Federal authorities under the direction of United States Attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani of the Southern District. Federal investigators have also subpoenaed the records of several city agencies.

International Falling oil prices have pushed Mexico to the brink of disaster, according to economists, bankers and diplomats. The situation will require a dramatic rescue package that goes well beyond simply lending additional money, they say.
