HOLLYWOOD SEEKS CONTROL OF OUTLETS
Hollywood is trying to expand its hold over the exhibition outlets for the movies and television shows that it produces by buying television stations and movie theaters. In mid-February, for example, MCA Inc., the parent company of Universal Pictures, bought television station WOR in New Jersey for $387 million. The 20th Century-Fox Film Corporation last year purchased six television stations in major cities. And both Columbia Pictures Industries and MCA recently bought theaters. Owning the final outlets for programs is not a new business for the movie makers. Their grip was so strong in the late 1940's that the Government separated the functions in a series of antitrust orders. Many of the big movie makers were forced to split their theater and production activies, and are still subject to those orders unless they win special permission from the courts.
