The Pakistani authorities arrested and jailed the opposition leader Benazir Bhutto today, as street protesters stepped up a campaign against the Government of President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq. On the most turbulent day of political protest since 1983, at least four people were killed in clashes with the police in Lahore, and several hundred were reported wounded here and in Karachi, Larkana and Peshawar. The police in Lahore and Karachi used tear gas, clubs and some gunfire to break up large groups of demonstrators, who were defying a Government prohibition on public meetings imposed earlier this week. Some Blame the U.S. Protesters in Lahore shouted, ''Death to Zia!'' and ''Zia is a Dog!'' Others screamed, ''Death to the Americans,'' apparently because of the Reagan Administration's support for the Government. [ In Washington, the State Department criticized the crackdown, saying, ''We regret the numerous arrests, including that of Benazir Bhutto, and the limitations placed on freedom of movement.'' ] Miss Bhutto, the 33-year-old head of the Pakistan People's Party, was arrested tonight after addressing several thousand people at a rally in the port city of Karachi. The Government said she would be held for one month.

The Senate moved toward a confrontation with the White House today as it prepared to adopt legislation that would impose stringent economic sanctions on South Africa. In a test vote on Wednesday, the Republican-controlled chamber voted 89 to 11 in favor of a bill that would ban all new investment in South Africa as a way of exerting pressure on Pretoria to abandon its racial system of apartheid. After debating the issue throughout the day, the Senate recessed late this evening. Today Larry Speakes, the White House spokesman, was asked what message Mr. Reagan would send to the Senate on the sanctions issue. The answer, he said, was, ''Don't.'' The President, Mr. Speakes added, ''feels strongly about sanctions'' and continues to oppose them.

Women and children were trapped in upper stories of shattered apartment buildings. About 100 people, nearly all civilians, have died in recent explosions in the capital. [ A3:4-6. ]

For a few years after it was founded in 1978, the Micropro International Corporation boasted the personal computer industry's most popular word processing software, Wordstar. But as Wordstar has been overtaken by newer and flashier programs, Micropro has struggled to regain lost market share and earnings. Now the San Rafael, Calif., manufacturer is undergoing the second management upheaval in its brief history. On Wednesday Micropro confirmed the dismissal of its president and chief executive, H. Glen Haney, who was brought in just three years ago, and the resignations of two vice presidents, of sales and international operations, and of finance and administration.

Reacting to the resignation Wednesday of Charles R. Schwab from the board of directors, the stock of BankAmerica Corporation yesterday moved in fits and starts amid heavy trading. As the sixth most actively traded stock on the New York Stock Exchange, it closed at $12.375, unchanged, after trading as high as $12.75 and as low as $12, which matched its low for the last 12 months. One block of nearly 200,000 shares traded at $12.125.
