Amid the Halloween parties and college students' calling parents to say when they would be home for Thanksgiving, baseball has just kept going on. The fans at Shea Stadium dressed in ski wear and consumed hot chocolate in record volumes. The grounds crew used special fertilizers and hoped the grass would not turn brown. The pitchers blew on their hands and started fires in the bullpen.
