LEAD: American helicopter gunships sank three small Iranian patrol boats near the center of the Persian Gulf tonight after at least one Iranian vessel opened fire on a patrolling helicopter, the Pentagon said. At least two Iranians were killed. The American helicopters were not damaged, and there were no American casualties, the Pentagon said.

She served as U.S. Ambassador to Italy from 1953 to 1956, and as a U.S. representative for Connecticut's 4th congressional district from 1943 to 1947. She was married to Henry Luce, publisher of Time, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated.
