LEAD: The Pritzker family of Chicago has offered $10 a share, or about $368 million, to buy the outstanding common stock of Ramada Inc., the hotel and gambling casino operator.
LEAD: AS much as New Yorkers take jazz clubs for granted, noticing them only when they close, they are one of the things that make New York distinct among the world's cities. An integral part of the cultural life, the clubs are also one of the city's better faces. So there's good news: New York, in the midst of a miserable year for clubs and restaurants, has seen, in the last six months, a small explosion of new rooms featuring jazz.
LEAD: The House voted today to permit the death penalty for murders related to Federal drug crimes and to deny even casual drug users a wide variety of Federal benefits, such as student loans and occupancy in public housing.
LEAD: As the pressure mounts on the four Yonkers Councilmen holding out, hardly a night goes by when they are not seen on TV making the same two points. First, they say, Federal officials have unfairly singled out Yonkers. Second, they say, people on Yonkers's white East Side don't mind living beside middle-class blacks, they just don't want the welfare types who would come in because of the court order to build low-income units.

William Scott Middlebrooks is an American retired professional baseball third baseman and is currently the main color analyst for the Boston Red Sox Radio Network on WEEI-FM. He also does color analysis for the Red Sox on NESN. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the Red Sox on May 2, 2012, and played with them through 2014. He also played in MLB for the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers. He also worked as an analyst for a 2024 AL Wild Card series on ESPN Radio. A fifth round draft pick in the 2007 MLB draft out of Liberty-Eylau High School in Texarkana, Texas, Middlebrooks signed with the Red Sox for $925,000, bypassing his commitment to Texas A&M University. Middlebrooks was originally a shortstop, but the Red Sox converted him into a third baseman in the minor leagues. He represented the United States in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game. Following Middlebrooks' emergence as the Red Sox's starting third baseman in 2012, the organization traded former All-Star Kevin Youkilis. After struggles in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Red Sox traded Middlebrooks to the San Diego Padres before the 2015 season. He signed minor league contracts with the Brewers and Rangers before the 2016 and 2017 seasons, respectively.

Vietnam Airlines Flight 831, a Tupolev Tu-134, crashed in a rice field 6 kilometres N of Bangkok International Airport, while operating a flight from Hanoi, Vietnam to Bangkok, Thailand, on 9 September 1988. The cause of the accident is undetermined; however, the pilots reported the aircraft may have been struck by lightning as it approached to land. Three crew and 73 passengers died in the accident, whilst 14 others survived. This accident was the second deadliest accident at the time in Thailand, and is currently the fifth deadliest.
