Gold Falls As Mideast Sales Jump

LEAD: Gold prices plunged yesterday in New York in near-panic selling on reports of unexpectedly large sales by Middle Eastern interests. Statisticians at the Commodity Exchange in New York said the decline of more than $23 an ounce was the biggest one-day drop since Feb. 28, 1983, when bullion plunged by $42.50, to $400.50.
